Online Business Manager’s POV: If SEO is Dead…So Is Keyword Density

Hey, look, we’re almost done with our 9 point lessons on blogging without SEO…I’m so excited.

Ok, tip #8 from our Linda Ruth lesson plan:

8.     Don’t obsess about keyword density. Practices having to do with keyword density are increasingly irrelevant, and in fact can result in content that looks like spam to the new Google updates. In keeping with Google’s long-time strategy, the search engine’s recent updates look, above all, for the natural use of language in web content. Use your keywords in your titles and captions, and don’t worry so much about using them in the body of the text.

I don’t know about you, but I am so relieved.  I no longer have to worry if my keywords are between 1% and 3% of my words within the blog?  I only have to make sure that they are in the title and photo captions?  I no longer have to write for two audiences: the reader and the search “bots”?  That is so awesome!

This isn’t to say that keywords are no longer important.  It is still how we know what people are searching for.  As AJ Kohn said in his own blog:

Using the keywords people expect to see can only help make your content more readable, which is still a tremendously undervalued aspect of SEO. Because people scan text and rarely read word for word.

And what do you think they’re scanning for? What do you think is rattling around in their brain when they’re scanning your content? It’s not something random like ‘bellhop poodle duster’, it’s probably the keyword that brought them there.

You may think Google is smart enough to figure it out. You’ll claim that Google’s gotten far more sophisticated in the application of synonyms and topical modeling. And you’d be right to a degree. But why take the chance? Particularly since users crave the repetition and consistency.
